Colin Kaepernick seems to be a household name in 2017. What started in 2016 has been ignited and grown rapidly this year. There are many different view points on this controversial issue but I simply have one question: Why do people have such a problem with what Kaepernick is doing? There are many forms of protest that have been used throughout our nations history but in terms of peacefulness and following the law, it doesn’t get much better than simply kneeling. The controversy lies in that Kaepernick is kneeling during something that is so meaningful to the majority of people in our country: the national anthem. Recently i stumbled across a very important piece of news that seems to be unknown by most. Originally Kaepernick sat on the bench during the anthem but a veteran contacted him and asked to meet him in person. Nate Boyer is an US Army veteran who saw what Kaepernick was doing not as a sign of disrespect but as an opportunity for change. He asked Kaepernick to kneel for the anthem rather than sit on the bench. This solution would allow Kaepernick to protest the issue at hand, but also to steer clear of disrespecting those who fought or lost their lives for our country. Kneeling is something that is very powerful and used for praying for fallen soldiers and showing respect to those who served. It was Boyer who inspired Kaepernick to continue protesting the recent and very frequent cases of unnecessary police brutality against young African American men. Those who are so fired up over Kaepernick and his form of protest should search for actual facts before making assumptions and claiming he’s disrespecting those who served. The answer lies in that many people don’t have all of the facts about what’s going on. The media continues to pump out stories and our president continues to throw gasoline on the fire of this issue.
